One Place, One Story: The Story Behind Accra's Black Star Square

At the heart of Accra, Ghana, stands one of the country's most recognisable landmarks: Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square.

Built in 1961 under Ghana's first President, Kwame Nkrumah, the square was created to celebrate Ghana becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957. Today, it remains a powerful symbol of freedom, unity and national pride.

The square takes its name from the Black Star, a symbol of African liberation and hope that also appears proudly at the centre of Ghana's national flag. Towering above the square is the Black Star Gate, inscribed with the words "Freedom and Justice"—a reminder of the values that helped shape modern Ghana.

Today, Black Star Square hosts some of the country's most important national celebrations, including Independence Day parades, state ceremonies and cultural events. For many Ghanaians, it's more than a monument—it's a place where history, identity and the future come together.
